Visitor visa (temporary resident visa)

Indian passport holders do need a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa) to enter Canada (not an eTA).

Step-by-step process.

Prepare & confirm documents.

Typical documents you will need (IRCC will produce a personalised checklist when you start):
• Valid passport (scans of bio page)
• Two passport-style photos meeting Canadian specs.
• Completed application form IMM 5257 (online) and any other forms IRCC lists (e.g., IMM 5707 family form).
• Proof of funds (bank statements, fixed deposits, salary slips, income tax returns).
• Travel itinerary / flight & hotel bookings (provisional is fine).
• Cover letter explaining purpose and length of stay.
• Employment letter / leave letter or proof of ties to India (property, family).
• Invitation letter + copy of host’s status in Canada (if visiting family/friends).
• Police certificate or medical exam only if requested by IRCC (medical exam usually if staying >6 months or otherwise asked).

Biometrics

Most Indian applicants must give biometrics (fingerprints + photo). IRCC will either ask for biometrics during the online flow or send a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL) after you apply. You book and attend a VAC (VFS) appointment to give them.

Attend VAC for biometrics / optional VAC services.

Book your biometric appointment at a Canada VAC in India (VFS operates the VACs). Bring: BIL/receipt, passport, appointment confirmation and ID as instructed. VACs can also provide printing/photos and courier services (optional paid services).

IRCC decision & passport submission.

If approved they will issue a passport submission request (a letter instructing you to send your passport to VAC or the visa office). You then submit passport to the VAC for visa stamping and pay any VAC courier/processing charges requested. VAC returns the passport.

Travel & arrival.

Carry originals of key documents (passport with visa, invitation, proof of funds, travel itinerary) for the Canada border officer. Final entry is determined by the CBSA officer at arrival.
